Visualizing 2022’s Bond Carnage

Manny Bernabe2022-10-05

Bonds have been been getting smoked in 2022. Rising interest rates, inflation and tighter monetary policy are resulting in the largest bond loses in recent history.

Jim Bianco of Bianco Research has a favorite chart to show how bad it’s been for bonds.

However, there’s a better way to visualize this information and make it interactive.

Explore The Data

This is my version of the chart pulling data for Vanguards Total Bond Market Index Fund (BND) which tracks investment-grade U.S. dollar-denominated bonds of intermediate-term length.

You can select a year and compare.

The carnage has been truly historic. Is this a bottom? Buying opportunity?
